It turns out to be a pretty simple task on the surface – they write down words that have been spoken to make a permanent physical copy.

Transcriptionists have been around since pen and paper were invented. Still, today’s technology allows people who are nowhere near the speaker to create a physical record and provide evidence of what has been said.

One thing that we must realize, though, is that transcription is more than just listening and writing. There are several intricacies involved, such as knowing the speaker’s tone and writing down minor audio cues to capture the essence of what is being said.

Furthermore, every transcriptionist must have a great hearing to understand the speakers, especially if different accents are involved.

Do you have what it takes to be a transcriptionist?

You need to have sharp hearing and listen well to understand what the speaker is saying. You also have to analyze the situation in which the recording is happening to be able to accurately picture the events in the audio in your written output.

Aside from that, you are required to have a decent internet connection, a working computer, writing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, over-the-ear headphones, and a foot pedal.

The over-the-ear headphone is a must if you want to hear the audio clearly. It will actually make your job easier because those big foam pads that cover your ear will block out extraneous noise and lessen the stress on your ears.

 

The foot pedal, on the other hand, is not a requirement. ❌

However, it is highly recommended. The pedal plugs into your USB port and allows you to control your audio software without using your keyboard and mouse.

If you missed just one word, you’d need to switch applications and press the pause and rewind buttons – that’s going to take a lot of time, and you would have missed several words by then. 

If you have the foot-operated device, pausing the audio is as simple as stomping down on the pedal. It would increase your productivity and therefore increase your pay! 

But before you head over to Amazon and purchase those, you must know that GMR Transcription requires you to pass a strict transcription test on their site before you could even start getting projects.

 

GMR Transcription Review – Things you should know.

GMR Transcription is a remote freelance job, so don’t expect any employer-employee benefits. They accept transcription and other related jobs from their clients and then outsource it to transcriptionists – you!

If there’s one advantage in that arrangement, you can work at your own pace and at your own time. You can do it anywhere you want, and as long as you get the job done, GMR Transcription wouldn’t care how you did it.

How much do GMT transcriptionist make?

If you want to be a transcriptionist, go to their website, and fill out their application form. Once done, you must upload your resume – make sure it is in .doc or .docx format.

They do not say how much they are paying per project as it varies depending on the turnaround time, number of speakers, and audio quality.

There are claims on their website that most transcriptionists can earn a good $1,000 to $3,000 a month, though – depending on their skill.

 

Wondering if there are any other jobs you can do aside from typing?

Well, since it is a transcription service, you’re expected to do a lot of that – typing. Aside from writing down the audio recording, you can also do translation, editing, and proofreading, but that is reserved for those who have the skills or have already been promoted within the system.

Without a doubt, GMR Transcription is a legitimate service. They have an Indeed.com page, and there are multiple freelancer reviews out there that confirm they got paid. 

All you need is to invest in a good system – that is, computer, internet connection, and foot pedal – then you’re good to go and apply!

But don’t get your hopes up just yet – people say that they have stringent qualifications for you to be even considered as a freelance transcriptionist.

Being legit is one thing, but company culture is another. 💯

 

What do other freelancers say about GMR?

One of the most common comments that I saw during my research is that their standard is high, like really high. It is challenging, especially for projects with short turnaround times and difficult speakers. Aside from that, I haven’t seen many complaints from their workers or their clients.

 

GMR Transcription Cons

I really haven’t found any negative comments during my research. That just means two things – they treat their workers pretty well, or they have a good internet bot crawler that automatically takes down any negative comments. I’m inclined to believe the former is true.

If you already have a computer and an internet connection, the investment that you must make is a foot pedal.

You can purchase it off Amazon, and it will set you back by at least $25. A pair of transcription headphones is also required and will cost you at least $10. But if you want to go with a nice brand, be prepared to shell out a cool $50 or more.

GMR Transcription is a pretty good service that offers a good source of income for side hustlers like you. But why not take it a notch further?
