Today, students from all over the world are no longer allowed to attend a lecture physically, which is one of the many reasons why the concept of online tutoring has considerably increased in popularity lately. 

Instead, they are required by schools to connect and update their teachers using online platforms and teleconferencing software such as Zoom, Teams, and Meet.

While I entirely understand how difficult it is to shift to a new teaching way, we must also be aware that online classes have been around for quite a long time. 

If we will check the history books, we will see that the first set of online courses was offered back in 1984 by the Electronic University Network. 

Fast forward to today, virtual classes have tremendously improved, and most courses are now labeled as “self-paced” – attracting millions of people interested in a convenient and cost-effective approach.

While the concept of e-learning may not appeal to everyone, a growing number of students from across ages and walks of life are starting to discover and love this portable learning option. 

As a matter of fact, even prestigious universities are starting to offer courses that can be accomplished purely online!

Earlier this year, I worked on a freelance basis as an ESL (English as Second Language) teacher in Native Camp (with Japanese students) and Acadsoc (with Chinese students). 

Since I love teaching conversational lessons, I really enjoyed ending my day teaching my determined students.

However, it wasn’t as glamorous as it seems. The thing that I hated the most about my experience was the poorly paid rate per hour.

I mean, that wouldn’t have been that bad if I was guaranteed classes everyday, but most of these companies I dealt with didn’t work like that. 

There were days where I had zero students on my roster, and this alone prompted me to consider other side-hustles instead.

While I was doing my research at the time, I stumbled upon WyzAnt and was actually quite surprised by the number of tutors hyping this platform because of its fantastic pay rate. 

Before I continue with my review, I want to clarify that I am in no way, share, or form affiliated with WyzAnt, nor am I compensated for giving a positive remark about their service. 

With this being said, you can rest assured knowing that this post will only contain the truth and nothing but the truth – you won’t find any shady upsells or offers. 

If, after reading my WyzAnt review, you figure out that you’re not ready to become a tutor yet, I also included my most recommended way of earning online. 

It’s just there as a suggestion, so make sure to check it out and see whether it’s something you would consider pursuing.

What is WyzAnt Tutoring all about?

WyzAnt has been around since 2005, and it prides itself with about 80k qualified tutors from the United States. 

The whole website is structured so that aspiring tutees can connect with thousands of subject matter experts and be allowed to learn from them on a private 1-on-1 setting online or in-person (depending on location).

 

So basically, their clientele are both the students and the tutors.

For students’ case, they can choose whoever they like and decide which among the tutors are within their budget. 

After each session, they will be prompted to rate their tutors’ expertise, and these comments will be reflected on the tutor’s page. 

 

So, that means that as a tutor, you have to give your 100% to get excellent ratings! ⭐

You can decide how much you want to charge and the subject areas that you are most comfortable teaching in for the tutors’ case. 

You can also decline students if ever your plate is full. And personally, I find that as a great benefit since I’m well aware that similar companies penalize their tutors whenever they decline students.

Another advantage I like that tutors have complete freedom to charge how much they think it’s necessary. This ensures that you won’t get the same lousy $2/hr that I have experienced. 

And if you are confident enough with your subject matter or are tutoring a highly-specialized subject, you can even bump up your hourly rate and charge anywhere between $30-50/hr. 

Not bad, right?

 

 

In terms of legitimacy? 😊

WyzAnt has an A+ rating and has been accredited by BBB since 2007. It has around 15 complaints, but after reading them all, I found that most of them are just miscommunications and not actual problems regarding its service. 

Additionally, WyzAnt has a high 4.6 rating on Trustpilot, where almost 87% of customers rated it as excellent.

It has been featured in Yahoo Finance, Entrepreneur, Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Fortune, Chicago Tribune, and even The New York Times. It has also won the 2019 EdTech Awards from EdTech Digest. 

With such media transparency, no one contests the idea that WyzAnt is one legitimate learning platform.

One of the reasons students and tutors well love it is because it integrates technology efficiently. 📲

 

Its application and site have tools such as mobile support, audio and video chat, collaborative whiteboards, screen sharing, and even its own code editor (for programming-based lessons).

In terms of social media presence, it has around 1.4k followers on Instagram and a massive 19.3k on Facebook. 

I find the numbers appealing for a business like this one since it is not usual to have more than 5k followers for education-based products.

 

How Does WyzAnt Tutoring Work?

I like WyzAnt because it offers special teaching categories from teaching English, biology, chemistry, computer, reading, and even technical subjects for higher educational levels. 

According to their site, they have helped university students from Harvard, Arizona State, Stanford, and the University of Michigan! With this being said, aspiring tutors can seriously get a place in the program.

 

But here’s the catch – joining the platform is not easy. ❌

 

And for me, that’s a good thing. 👍

At the end of the day, the company just wants to provide value for money, which explains why they have strict hiring rules and a pretty tricky proficiency test.

To get you started on your journey, you must be at least 18 years old and must possess a valid social security number. 

Also, it would be best if you came from the United States alone. To give you a more detailed registration process, let’s dig deep on how to start:

 

Step 1: Complete an online application and be prepared to take a proficiency test (only one take per subject and must be completed within 30 minutes).

 

Step 2: While filling out the application, make sure that you choose all the subjects you are interested in tutoring and write a detailed free form introduction about yourself, teaching experiences (if any), degrees, certifications, and licenses.

You also need to discuss your expected hourly rate, desired travel radius (for in-person tutorials), and your mailing address.

 

Step 3: You will be prompted to create an account, so be sure to upload a professional-looking photo and write down an exciting headline. Also, make sure to write down all your experiences on your profile.

 

Step 4: Read the company’s Independent Tutor Agreement and click on “agree.”

 

Step 5: Once you are all done, all you have to do is to wait for a minimum of one and a maximum of 10 business days to get a review of whether you passed their screening.

If you’re accepted, you’ll finally be able to list your services on subjects where you passed. If not, then you’ll be redirected to the subjects page, where you can consider other areas to teach and get a proficiency test again.

 

 

So, does that mean I can start earning?  💬

 

Yes, you can finally start profiting and getting students as soon as they activate your account. You can look at the rates of tutors from similar subjects and adjust accordingly. 

If you ask me for a pro tip, I suggest that you lower your rates for the first few weeks – not to sell yourself short but to attract students and gain many positive reviews on your page.

Also, you do not have to worry about listing your subjects because, unlike other platforms, all tutors have equal opportunities to be seen online. 

This suggests that WyzAnt does not take payments to give premium listings and doesn’t ensure placements on the first page.

In this sense, students may get different results whenever they search for a tutor, depending on their needs and preferences.

 

What’s the payment like, you ask? 🤔

Earning from WyzAnt is very much possible, and your profits depend entirely on you. Basically, all tutors get 75% of their poster hourly rate per lesson, while the company takes the other 25% as a fee. 

They usually process the payments on the 1st and the 15th day of the month via direct bank transfer or Paypal.

 

In my experience with sites like this one, their fee structure is acceptable! 

The 25% is worth it since tutors can access a unique learning platform with all the right sets of useful tools. Here is their most famous one!

WyzAnt has a lot of positive reviews online. Even the popular site, Side Husl, gave it a positive rating due to its exceptional rates. I also found a post on Reddit from three years ago reiterating how good the company is for beginners. 

On Indeed, employees rated it with an incredible 4 out of 5 stars, and if you do a quick thematic analysis, you can see the following points raised:

•  It is flexible in the sense that you can change your rates any time and adjust on whether you want to get new students or take a short pause for a while ✓

Is WyzAnt Tutoring a Scam?

WyzAnt Tutoring is not a scam, and I highly recommend this to aspiring instructors who are confident with their knowledge in specific areas.

While this is just a platform that connects tutors and students, please do not expect that the company will guarantee you a steady flow of students.

You see, the number of tutees you can have depends on your rating and the quality of your service.

With this being said, I suggest that you take time mastering your craft and giving a 100% whenever you have lessons.

Additionally, you must promptly reply to your tutees since your response time, and availability will be posted on your profile (you cannot edit it!).

 

Based on the company’s policy, the more positive ratings you have and the quicker your response time is, the higher the chances the algorithm will catch your profile and ensure that you can have the best visibility.

While this seems to be a great side hustle, please note that everyone is not tailored to become a teacher. Not all of us are gifted with the skill to teach or explain complex concepts in a much simpler manner.
