Teaching is a noble profession, and it can be one of the most profitable careers online. With hundreds of websites and apps in this field, it probably made you wonder whether you should become an online instructor during your free time.Â
With this being said, this post will answer the question:
Â
Is WyzAnt Tutoring a scam, or could it be the best opportunity out there? đĄ
Â
With the pandemic limiting our face to face interactions, the very concept of education drastically changed in the last couple of months.Â
Today, students from all over the world are no longer allowed to attend a lecture physically, which is one of the many reasons why the concept of online tutoring has considerably increased in popularity lately.Â
Instead, they are required by schools to connect and update their teachers using online platforms and teleconferencing software such as Zoom, Teams, and Meet.
While I entirely understand how difficult it is to shift to a new teaching way, we must also be aware that online classes have been around for quite a long time.Â
If we will check the history books, we will see that the first set of online courses was offered back in 1984Â by the Electronic University Network.Â
Fast forward to today, virtual classes have tremendously improved, and most courses are now labeled as âself-pacedâ â attracting millions of people interested in a convenient and cost-effective approach.
While the concept of e-learning may not appeal to everyone, a growing number of students from across ages and walks of life are starting to discover and love this portable learning option.Â
As a matter of fact, even prestigious universities are starting to offer courses that can be accomplished purely online!Â
Donât believe me? Check out some of the following range of courses offered by Harvard Business School, Stanford, and Indiana University.
Â
Itâs about time that we acknowledge that the field of education is changing for the better, as reflected by the number of opportunities itâs offering! đ
Â
From learning a new language, developing a hobby, or honing a skill, there are various learning sites that you can sign-up for to get instant access to experienced tutors from all over the world.
Simultaneously, itâs not only the students and hobbyists who can take advantage of these favorable changes.
If you consider yourself a subject matter expert, you can also profit by becoming an online tutor yourself! Here, the beauty is that you can do this as a side hustle wherever you are in the world. đşď¸
Â
Given my business line, you can already expect me to know a thing or two about this since Iâve also tried my hands on this opportunity. đ
Â
Earlier this year, I worked on a freelance basis as an ESL (English as Second Language) teacher in Native Camp (with Japanese students) and Acadsoc (with Chinese students).Â
Since I love teaching conversational lessons, I really enjoyed ending my day teaching my determined students.
However, it wasnât as glamorous as it seems. The thing that I hated the most about my experience was the poorly paid rate per hour.
Iâm not sure if I am allowed to disclose exactly how much that is but let me give you a range of what you can expect on an hourly basis.Â
Â
Ready?
*deep breath*Â
Â
Â
An insignificant $1-$4 per hour. đ
I mean, that wouldnât have been that bad if I was guaranteed classes everyday, but most of these companies I dealt with didnât work like that.Â
There were days where I had zero students on my roster, and this alone prompted me to consider other side-hustles instead.
While I was doing my research at the time, I stumbled upon WyzAnt and was actually quite surprised by the number of tutors hyping this platform because of its fantastic pay rate.Â
Before I continue with my review, I want to clarify that I am in no way, share, or form affiliated with WyzAnt, nor am I compensated for giving a positive remark about their service.Â
With this being said, you can rest assured knowing that this post will only contain the truth and nothing but the truth â you wonât find any shady upsells or offers.Â
If, after reading my WyzAnt review, you figure out that youâre not ready to become a tutor yet, I also included my most recommended way of earning online.Â
Itâs just there as a suggestion, so make sure to check it out and see whether itâs something you would consider pursuing.Â
If you are up for that, then buckle up as I walk you through the ins and outs of online tutoring with WyzAnt. đ
Â
What is WyzAnt Tutoring all about?
WyzAnt has been around since 2005, and it prides itself with about 80k qualified tutors from the United States.Â
The whole website is structured so that aspiring tutees can connect with thousands of subject matter experts and be allowed to learn from them on a private 1-on-1 setting online or in-person (depending on location).
Â
So basically, their clientele are both the students and the tutors.
For studentsâ case, they can choose whoever they like and decide which among the tutors are within their budget.Â
After each session, they will be prompted to rate their tutorsâ expertise, and these comments will be reflected on the tutorâs page.Â
Â
So, that means that as a tutor, you have to give your 100% to get excellent ratings! â
You can decide how much you want to charge and the subject areas that you are most comfortable teaching in for the tutorsâ case.Â
You can also decline students if ever your plate is full. And personally, I find that as a great benefit since Iâm well aware that similar companies penalize their tutors whenever they decline students.
Another advantage I like that tutors have complete freedom to charge how much they think itâs necessary. This ensures that you wonât get the same lousy $2/hr that I have experienced.Â
And if you are confident enough with your subject matter or are tutoring a highly-specialized subject, you can even bump up your hourly rate and charge anywhere between $30-50/hr.Â
Not bad, right?
Â
Â
In terms of legitimacy? đ
WyzAnt has an A+ rating and has been accredited by BBB since 2007. It has around 15 complaints, but after reading them all, I found that most of them are just miscommunications and not actual problems regarding its service.Â
Additionally, WyzAnt has a high 4.6 rating on Trustpilot, where almost 87% of customers rated it as excellent.
It has been featured in Yahoo Finance, Entrepreneur, Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Fortune, Chicago Tribune, and even The New York Times. It has also won the 2019 EdTech Awards from EdTech Digest.Â
With such media transparency, no one contests the idea that WyzAnt is one legitimate learning platform.
One of the reasons students and tutors well love it is because it integrates technology efficiently. đ˛
Â
Its application and site have tools such as mobile support, audio and video chat, collaborative whiteboards, screen sharing, and even its own code editor (for programming-based lessons).
In terms of social media presence, it has around 1.4k followers on Instagram and a massive 19.3k on Facebook.Â
I find the numbers appealing for a business like this one since it is not usual to have more than 5k followers for education-based products.
Â
How Does WyzAnt Tutoring Work?
I like WyzAnt because it offers special teaching categories from teaching English, biology, chemistry, computer, reading, and even technical subjects for higher educational levels.Â
According to their site, they have helped university students from Harvard, Arizona State, Stanford, and the University of Michigan! With this being said, aspiring tutors can seriously get a place in the program.
Â
But hereâs the catch â joining the platform is not easy. â
Â
And for me, thatâs a good thing. đ
At the end of the day, the company just wants to provide value for money, which explains why they have strict hiring rules and a pretty tricky proficiency test.
To get you started on your journey, you must be at least 18 years old and must possess a valid social security number.Â
Also, it would be best if you came from the United States alone. To give you a more detailed registration process, letâs dig deep on how to start:
Â
Step 1: Complete an online application and be prepared to take a proficiency test (only one take per subject and must be completed within 30 minutes).
Â
Step 2:Â While filling out the application, make sure that you choose all the subjects you are interested in tutoring and write a detailed free form introduction about yourself, teaching experiences (if any), degrees, certifications, and licenses.
You also need to discuss your expected hourly rate, desired travel radius (for in-person tutorials), and your mailing address.
Â
Step 3:Â You will be prompted to create an account, so be sure to upload a professional-looking photo and write down an exciting headline. Also, make sure to write down all your experiences on your profile.
Â
Step 4:Â Read the companyâs Independent Tutor Agreement and click on âagree.â
Â
Step 5:Â Once you are all done, all you have to do is to wait for a minimum of one and a maximum of 10 business days to get a review of whether you passed their screening.
If youâre accepted, youâll finally be able to list your services on subjects where you passed. If not, then youâll be redirected to the subjects page, where you can consider other areas to teach and get a proficiency test again.
Â
Â
So, does that mean I can start earning?  đŹ
Â
Yes, you can finally start profiting and getting students as soon as they activate your account. You can look at the rates of tutors from similar subjects and adjust accordingly.Â
If you ask me for a pro tip, I suggest that you lower your rates for the first few weeks â not to sell yourself short but to attract students and gain many positive reviews on your page.
Also, you do not have to worry about listing your subjects because, unlike other platforms, all tutors have equal opportunities to be seen online.Â
This suggests that WyzAnt does not take payments to give premium listings and doesnât ensure placements on the first page.
In this sense, students may get different results whenever they search for a tutor, depending on their needs and preferences.
Â
Whatâs the payment like, you ask? đ¤
Earning from WyzAnt is very much possible, and your profits depend entirely on you. Basically, all tutors get 75% of their poster hourly rate per lesson, while the company takes the other 25% as a fee.Â
They usually process the payments on the 1st and the 15th day of the month via direct bank transfer or Paypal.
Â
In my experience with sites like this one, their fee structure is acceptable!Â
The 25% is worth it since tutors can access a unique learning platform with all the right sets of useful tools. Here is their most famous one!Â
Â
WyzAnt Tutoring Reviews
WyzAnt has a lot of positive reviews online. Even the popular site, Side Husl, gave it a positive rating due to its exceptional rates. I also found a post on Reddit from three years ago reiterating how good the company is for beginners.Â
On Indeed, employees rated it with an incredible 4 out of 5 stars, and if you do a quick thematic analysis, you can see the following points raised:
Â
â˘Â The company is an excellent place to start tutoring â
â˘Â It is flexible in the sense that you can change your rates any time and adjust on whether you want to get new students or take a short pause for a while â
â˘Â As a side hustle, it pays better than other online education-based opportunities â
â˘Â A decent platform with a competitive environment â
â˘Â It can be tough to get students as a beginner â
â˘Â If youâre teaching is on point, youâll have more students! â
Â
Is WyzAnt Tutoring a Scam?
WyzAnt Tutoring is not a scam, and I highly recommend this to aspiring instructors who are confident with their knowledge in specific areas.
While this is just a platform that connects tutors and students, please do not expect that the company will guarantee you a steady flow of students.
You see, the number of tutees you can have depends on your rating and the quality of your service.
With this being said, I suggest that you take time mastering your craft and giving a 100% whenever you have lessons.
Additionally, you must promptly reply to your tutees since your response time, and availability will be posted on your profile (you cannot edit it!).
Â
Based on the companyâs policy, the more positive ratings you have and the quicker your response time is, the higher the chances the algorithm will catch your profile and ensure that you can have the best visibility.
While this seems to be a great side hustle, please note that everyone is not tailored to become a teacher. Not all of us are gifted with the skill to teach or explain complex concepts in a much simpler manner.
To get you started on an online opportunity that is more beginner-friendly, I suggest that you continue reading my recommendation below. đ
Â
I Have a Genuine Online Opportunity Just For You!
I have always been one of the first in line when it comes to trying various online opportunities and financial-based products. Because of that, I have experienced some of the best and worst of today.Â
Same as you, I was once dubious on whether itâs possible to earn a considerable income online. Luckily for me, I stumbled upon one of the most lucrative business models, and the rest is history.Â
Â
Iâm now earning well over four figures of passive income a month, and Iâm more than happy to show you how I did it.Â
Â
However, before I go into all the details, I need to let you know that I wonât be preaching to you about some magic-push-button-cash-system that can make you an overnight millionaire, okay?Â
You wonât hit 20K days from the get-go, but I can certainly promise you that your earnings will increase continuously if you put in the time and effort to make it happen.Â
The business model that Iâll be introducing you to requires a lot of dedication, persistence, and hard work above all else. Itâs a legit business that works, as reflected by these success stories.Â
Itâs widely recognized as affiliate marketing, and itâs a very straightforward type of business model that pays you every time you make a sale promoting other peopleâs products or services.Â
It basically requires you to go through a three-step build-up process until your reach the part where you start to get paid.Â
Â
Step 1:Â
The first step is to create a website (itâs easier than you think) and fill it up will helpful content that solves a specific problem. The topic you write about is irrelevant since nowadays, thereâs an audience for just about anything.
Â
Step 2:
The second step is to partner up with companies through their affiliate programs (most companies have them), copy the links they give you (affiliate links), and place them strategically on your site, so people click on them and buy the products that youâre recommending.Â
Â
Step 3:
The third step is to drive traffic to your pages through an online traffic technique called SEO (free traffic source) and flood your site with highly targeted visitors that want to read your content and click on the links that we just talked about.Â
Â
The fourth step is also the last one, and itâs my favorite for a reason. đ
This is the part where you watch the commission roll in and realize that this making money online thing works and that itâs indeed possible to make a living working on the internet.Â
Just like any other business, this one also requires you to submerge yourself into learning, and what better way to get started than to join the very same platform that helped me build the blog youâre on now â Wealthy Affiliate.Â
Without the continuous support this community has been giving me, I wouldnât have been where I am today, nor would I sit here and write this WyzAnt review.Â
They provided me with all the training and tools to go out with full confidence and dominate the affiliate marketing field.Â
Without them, I would be just another broke blogger trying to figure this out, and thatâs why Iâm forever grateful for our clash. đ¤
Â
I want nothing more than to have you as the newest addition to our family and invite you to join this welcoming community by signing up for the forever free starter membership.Â
With it, youâll be able to participate in the first few lessons for free and ultimately decide whether affiliate marketing is a career worth pursuing.Â
You wonât be asked to enter a credit card, nor will they force you to fill up extensive signup forms. All youâll be asked to do is select a username and join the platform using your real or made-up name.Â
Iâll personally welcome you on the inside, and you can have me as a 24/7 mentor, but as long as you promise me that you wonât bother me to tell you the secret to success. (because it doesnât exist, itâs just hard work!)Â
Iâll provide you with a combination of techniques, and you can get real insights based on my experiences on this site.Â
As I end my review, I hope that I was able to shed light and answer the question â Is WyzAnt tutoring a scam?
If you have enjoyed this post, please feel free to send it out to your work colleagues and friends by sharing it on social media to help spread the news on scams and all things financial.Â

Hey,
Great post! Itâs a good read, and itâs full of information I couldnât find in other places.
Considering the platformâs history (age) and all good benefits, especially the hourly rate, it seems like a tempting opportunity.
But tutoring online requires a great work schedule and many technical aspects such as a very fast internet connection.
Considering the amount of work youâll put into the platform, youâll basically end up selling your time for money (even though you still get to work remotely).
But I am a big fan of your second opportunity that allows you actually to build an online business. It takes time, itâs not easy, but thatâs exactly how businesses are built!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Much appreciated.
Cheers,
Dario
Hey, Dario. I hope youâre doing well.
My words exactly. Working as an online tutor is indeed a great opportunity, but youâre considered an active employee at the end of the day.
The whole idea of building an online business (in my mind, at least) is way different. My goal is, has been, and forever will be to free my time, work from anywhere, and have a stable passive income source.
WA can give you that (as it has done for me), and thatâs why it will forever stay my number one pick.
Hello. Great article.
You explained how Wyzant works thoroughly. I like how you highlighted a lot of the critical points as well. I know someone who does tutoring as a side-hustle. Maybe I will pass this info on to her.
Cheers!
Hey Tyler, howâs it going?
Please do. Iâm sure it will help her a lot. Anyways, thanks for the comment, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Hello,
This tutoring thing sounds like a great way to make money online. I have to admit, Iâve never thought about trying to tutor students online, though I do for my kids all the time.
They often come to me with questions about their school work, and I have to break it down for them in laymanâs terms to understand.
Iâm seriously considering trying to be a tutor for some money on the side.
Iâm not sure if I would be accepted, but I do have some extensive knowledge in several school areas, and I suppose it might help that I have a BA in Nutrition Science as well.
I always excelled at Science in school and English. Iâm good at spelling and grammar.
Thanks for this review! Iâm going to have to check it out now.
Katrina
Honestly, your resume is quite impressive as it is, and Iâm sure youâll find something. I wish you the best of luck on your journey, and hopefully, you nail the application process.
Also, leave a comment anywhere on this site, and Iâll gladly lend a helping hand if you need it.
Thanks for the comment, Katrina. Itâs always a blessing to hear from a reader of mine.
Hey, man, thanks a lot for taking the time to research Wyzant and share your review with the rest of us.
Iâve heard about this platform before, but since I was not able to learn more back then, I skipped the opportunity. Recent research brought me to your review here, and I have to say, this is a good one.
A lot of Wyzant reviews are good but not as in-depth and detailed as this one.
As for the platform itself, your review just confirmed my initial assumption that this is a legitimate place to start tutoring. I mean, their signing up process speaks for itself.
Thanks again for sharing your review.
I will also check your affiliate marketing recommendation at the end of this post. It seems like a great way to earn some money online. Thanks, and keep up the excellent work!
Iâm glad I could help, Ivan.
My advice is to check out both platforms and see which one suits you better. Iâm personally leaning towards WA, but youâre the one who has to choose at the end of the day.
Iâm sure you wonât go wrong with either one, and I hope you see success fast with whichever one you pick.
Thanks for the kind remarks, by the way. Itâs always good to hear a genuine opinion.
